Six years ago, Ryan and I met here in Jackson, spending time together in the city doing all the many things living here has to offer. We dated here. We fell in love here. We started a family here. This city has so much to offer couples that is "off the radar," i.e. cozy cafes, romantic exhibits, soulful entertainment. Jackson is a soulful city, and I hope this blog will serve as a reference for those seeking to discover new experiences in good company of your loved one when visiting Jackson, MS!
The Cinnamon & Apple Pop Tart was Saturday's Brunch special. The filling was the perfect amount of balanced sweetness between the two star ingredients. It was covered with a pumpkin glaze spiced with all the 'fall feels.' This pastry was made from scratch baked to perfection!
We thoroughly enjoyed our outing at Elvie's. I am already thinking about what I want to try from the menu on my next visit. The delicious comfort food, combined with the welcoming ambiance, made for the perfect Brunch date...
Neighborhood Fun Fact: If you appreciate one-of-a- kind gourmet donuts, stop in Campbell's Craft Donuts. It is right next door to Elvie's. ;)
Interested in 'the arts?' You must plan a visit to the Mississippi Museum of Art! When visiting, health and safety is a top priority. Advanced tickets are required and social distancing is practiced. All visitors and museum employees are required to wear face masks. Masks will be available onsite, but visitors are encouraged to bring their own. We received the comfiest masks to wear from Visit Jackson's 'Stay Safe Exploring Jackson MS' initiative. #VisitJacksonMS #SafelyExploreJXN #VisitMSResponsibly
This is an awesome outing for art enthusiasts. Ryan was eagerly excited for our visit. The museum always has a special exhibit in rotation. In addition to the museum's featured art collection, on this particular day we visited we explored the Van Gogh, Monet, Degas & Their Times exhibition. This exhibit is viewable through January 11, 2021.
Pictured above, The Museum Store. Where you can find array of exhibition-related items in addition to apparel that recognizes both the City of Jackson & Mississippi.
If you would like to visit the MMA, the museum requests that all guests schedule their visit in advance. You can do so by clicking here.
We were famished after a long and stimulating walk in the museum. It was time for dinner! Can you tell from the smiles on our face we were excited about our date night? We were! As music lovers, going out for dinner with some great live music is our ideal night out. Lucky for us, there is The Iron Horse Grill, located just down the street from the museum!
Music is such an important part of Mississippi culture. If you are going to feed your body with great food, you might as well feed your soul with some great music!
The Iron Horse Grill in downtown Jackson is sure to satisfy both serving good food & the Mississippi Music Experience with live entertainment. This landmark is legendary, built in 1906 was burned down TWICE and re-opened in 2014, back like never before.
The smell of charcoal greets you from the 'open kitchen' soon as you walk inside. There is a museum onsite that tells the history of iconic Mississippi music and musicians that's always open to tour. The Iron Horse Grill has two floors with lots of space to offer. You can book a wedding dinner reception, birthdays, and any other private event.
There is something about listening to live music while over dinner that always makes for a memorable evening. These are a few of the dishes we had below. All of the dishes are made in-house, including dessert. This time, they had lemon ice box pie on the menu. My favorite! It definitely did not disappoint.
After dinner and music we stepped out on the newly added intimate patio. Reflecting back on our day, we know this date will be added to the many happy memories we have made in Jackson, our home. Whether your are a visitor, or you have recently relocated and are trying to learn the city with soul, we hope you enjoy these outing ideas, while safely exploring Jackson.
